A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody

Victor V. Gurbo, a talented singer and songwriter, presents his reimagined version of Irving Berlin's timeless classic, "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody." Originally composed in 1919 and made famous as the theme song of the "Ziegfeld Follies," this song has recently entered the public domain. Gurbo's reinterpretation, created for WNYC's Public Song Project in March 2023, takes a unique approach to this beloved classic.

In his rendition, Gurbo explores the darker side of this often upbeat and major-key song. He presents it in a minor key, giving it a haunting quality. Accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Mark Caserta on bass and resonator guitar, as well as country singer Kathryn Lewis on vocals, Gurbo's version brings a fresh perspective to the song.

To maintain the original recording quality of the source material, the song was recorded using repurposed antique radios obtained from Redeemer Electric Labs. These converted radios, both amplifiers and microphones, contributed significantly to the unique tone of the recording.
