A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody

Victor V. Gurbo, a talented singer and songwriter, presents his reimagined version of Irving Berlin's timeless classic, "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody." Originally composed in 1919 and made famous as the theme song of the "Ziegfeld Follies," this song has recently entered the public domain. Gurbo's reinterpretation, created for WNYC's Public Song Project in March 2023, takes a unique approach to this beloved classic.

In his rendition, Gurbo explores the darker side of this often upbeat and major-key song. He presents it in a minor key, giving it a haunting quality. Accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Mark Caserta on bass and resonator guitar, as well as country singer Kathryn Lewis on vocals, Gurbo's version brings a fresh perspective to the song.

To maintain the original recording quality of the source material, the song was recorded using repurposed antique radios obtained from Redeemer Electric Labs. These converted radios, both amplifiers and microphones, contributed significantly to the unique tone of the recording.

Closer to You

Anton Commissaris, a talented solo artist hailing from Menlo Park, California, has released his latest single, “Closer To You.” With a song that could be comfortably covered by either Frank Sinatra or Stevie Wonder,
Commissaris sets the stage for the story of a man who is determined to get closer to a lovely woman of his infatuation. She has yet to notice and reciprocate his feelings, but he is determined to win her over and will be as patient as needed. This song is for all the men who refuse to give up on their dreams of romance with a special woman; for those who believe that romantic resolve will win the day.

This song features a vibrant rhythm section working a tight R&B medium backbeat as the song's anchoring groove. A lush piano accompaniment inflects the tune with rising flourishes, complimented by romantic guitar fills that are topped off with Commissaris’s rich and soothing vocals. "Closer to You" is delivered in the key of Db major with rich jazz-soul harmonies and an increasingly rare thing in today’s music; a bridge with a key change (to Eb major). The bridge provides structural contrast and a detour from the verse and chorus sections of the song, but it also informs the story. From there, we learn that the singer is coming to this quest for the lady’s love with some romance-inflicted scars from the past from which he seeks salvation.
